Canadian Prime Minister, Pierre
Elliot Trudeau, traveled through Europe wearing his striped boatneck
sweater, a bandana knotted
casually around his neck. Trudeau's bride, Margaret Sinclair,
dates
this photo to the late 1960's with her peasant skirt; hemp handbag and
afghan
-- a style of dressing that originated with the hippie culture and the
anti-war,
anti-establishment movements. Margaret was often referred to as
Canada's
paradoxical First Lady.
Boatneck sweaters first appeared in the late 1940's and actors like Montgomery Clift wore them. They disappeared during the 1950's and made a comeback in the 1960's. And women wore them too, of course, including Bardot herself. |
