Pantihose were available in many colors and textures, including fishnets. Twiggy wore them. Edie Sedgwick wore them. Movie stars and drag queens wore them. The grid pattern pressed into the soles of the feet, causing discomfort, but this was the generation of women who accepted a certain amount of discomfort with their beauty; and saying goodbye to the garter belt and stockings was cause to  celebrate.  Meanwhile, another style of dressing was taking hold, as the grass-roots, anti-establishment hippie culture was gaining momentum.
